A Battery’s Worst Nightmare (噩夢)
Portable electronics that can be carried about easily are only as good as their batteries and, let’s face it, batteries aren’t very good, especially when compared with, say, petrol, which packs 100 times a battery’s energy into an equal space. That’s why a large group of mechanical engineers (centered at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but with partners at other universities and companies) are hard at work in an effort to replace batteries with a tiny engine that runs on fuel. Imagine a battery-free life! When the fuel runs out in your laptop or mobile phone, you just fill up and go.
The engine―about the size of a ten-cent coin―starts with a combustion chamber (燃燒室) that burns hydrogen (氫) . Its tiny parts are etched onto silicon wafers (硅片) in the same manner that computer parts are imprinted onto integrated circuits (集成電路). The first engine is made up of five wafers. And since these wafers could be produced in much the same way as computer chips, they could probably be produced quite cheaply.
But the devil
in all this nice detail is efficiency(效率). Tiny engine parts don’t always
behave like their scaled-up parts of the first engine. Something between the
parts can slow down the works, according to
The scientists’ goal is to create an engine that will operate at 10 percent efficiency ―that is, 10 times better than batteries operate. Frechette says that a complete system, with all parts of place and working, will be set up in the next couple of years, but commercial models aren’t like until at least the end of the next ten years.
1. According to the passage, the title suggests that ________
A. batteries should be greatly improved B. petrol will be used instead of batteries
C. the time of batteries will be gone forever D. pollution caused by batteries must be solved
2. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “devil” in paragraph 3?
A. problem B. advantage C. invention D. technique
3. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The new invention doesn’t need any fuel.
B. The new engine has been produced in quantity.
C. The new invention is much cheaper than the battery.
D. The new engine needs to be improved before it’s on sale
4. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To introduce a new invention to readers.
B. To persuade readers not to use batteries.
C. To show us how the new invention works.
D. To declare when the engine will be on sale.

Starting school late should be the guiding principle (原則) for high schools
around the Puget Sound District. Next year,
For school leaders, it isn’t easy to make the change. Bus schedules have to be rearranged, sometimes presenting the districts with a choice of keeping traditional starting times at high schools or forcing elementary students to start much earlier. Some sports practice and event schedules can also be affected.
Around Puget Sound District, the Bainbridge Island School and Inglemoor
High School and Mercer Island High School have either moved starting time later
or created flexible (靈活的)schedules for students. Two of the
There are excellent reasons for such moves. Scientists have found that
teenagers’ bodies usually aren’t ready for sleep until around 11 p. m. And the
teens can sleep deeply until
Some of the lack of rush to make changes comes from comfort with the
existing condition. Parents - like the school leaders - are used to the present
schedules. In
Any school action that can deal with such difficult problems as depression and dropouts , while helping students with grades and getting along with parents, is one that is worthy of serious attention in every school district. Teenagers have adapted (使適應(yīng)) their sleep needs to school schedules for generations. It’s time that more schools put the students’ needs first.
5.What is the writer’s attitude toward the change in school time?
A. He is in favor of it. B. He seems to object to it.
C. He is unconcerned with it.

It was the first day of school. A new student, the son of a Japanese businessman, took his seat in the classroom of Grade 4. The teacher soon came to the classroom and said:
“Let’s begin by going over the American history we have learnt. Who said ‘Give me liberty (自由), or give me death’?”
What she saw were only blank faces except Timmy’s. He held up his hand and then said:“Patrick Henry, 1775.”
“Good,” said the teacher. “Who said ‘Government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish (死亡) from the earth’?”
There was no answer. Again Timmy raised his hand and said: “Abraham Lincoln, 1863.”
The teacher said to the class, holding back her anger, “You should be ashamed of yourselves. Timmy, who is new to come, yet knows more about the history.”
As she turned to write something on the blackboard, she heard a whisper, “Dammed (該死的) Japanese.”

Rats (鼠) have lived on the earth longer than man. And wherever man has gone, except for the very coldest parts of the world, rats have also gone and have very quickly grown in numbers.
History
books tell us that the armies of rats moved into Europe from
It didn’t take rats long to discover that there was a better way of traveling than on foot. They found ships just to their liking. These unlisted passengers had no trouble adjusting to sea life on any kind of ship.
In no time, they were exploring below decks and making holes in sacks (麻袋) and boxes filled with good things to eat. Then as now they were no fiends of sailors. Along the wharves (碼頭) of the seaports all over the world you can hear tales about rats. Some of these stories, such as those about rats being the first to leave the sinking ship, are probably true. This is because more rats live below decks in the very bottom of a ship. So they are the first to get wet if the ship develops a leak (漏洞). No wonder they run!
Though people have lived with rats all through history, they have said very little good about rats. Rats eat crops, damage property and even cause deaths by carrying disease from one place to another.
Yet, it is no easy job destroying rats. Rats defend their homes with great courage. Even a cat will think twice about fighting a large rat. And they are smart enough to live under all sorts of conditions. Now there are more rats living on the earth than there are people. It is thought that there are more than five billion rats alive today.

Science has told us too much about the moon that it is fairly easy to imagine what it would be like to get there. It is certainly not a friendly place. Since there is no air or water, there can be no life of any kind. There is not much variety of scenery either. For mile after mile there are only flat plains of dust with mountains around them. Above, the sun and stars shine in the black sky. If you step out of the mountain shadow, it means moving from the severe cold into intense (強(qiáng)烈的) heat. These extreme temperatures continually break rocks away from the surface of the mountains. The moon is also a very silent world, for sound waves can only travel through air. But beyond the broken horizon, you see a friendly sight. Our earth is shining more brightly than the stars. From this distance, it looks like an immense (巨大的) blue, green and brown ball.
( )62.The moon is an unfriendly place because .

In
one way of thinking, failure is part of life. In another way, failure may be a
way towards success. The “spider-story” is often told. Robert Bruce, leader of
the Scots in the thirteenth century, was hiding in a cave from the English. He
watched a spider (蜘蛛) making a web.
The spider tried to reach across a rough place in the rock. He tried six times.
On the seventh time he made it and went on to make his web. Bruce is said to
have been encouraged by this and to have gone on to defeat the English. Edison,
the inventor of the light bulb, made hundreds of models that failed before he
found the right way to make one. Once he was asked why he kept on trying to
make a new type of battery (電池) when he had failed so often, he replied, “Failure? I have no failure. Now
I know
So what? First, always think about your failure. What can you change so that things will go right next time?
Second, is the goal you’re trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about what your real goals may be. Think about this question, “If I do succeed in this, where will it get me?” This may help you prevent failure in things you shouldn’t be doing anyway.
The third thing to keep in mind about failure is that it’s a part of life. Learn to “l(fā)ive with yourself” even though you may have failed.
( )67.This passage deals with .

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A,B,C,D四個選項(xiàng)中.選出最佳選項(xiàng)填入答題卡。
A
Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experiences? Strangely enough, the answer to both these questions is yes. To some extent our intelligence is given us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of a person's intelligence are fixed at birth, but whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.
It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from the population, it is likely that their degrees of intelligence will be completely different.
56. Which of the following sentences best describes the writer's point on Paragraph 1?
A. To some extent, intelligence is given at birth.
B. Intelligence is developed by the environment.
C. Some people are born clever and others born stupid.
D. Intelligence is fixed at birth, but is developed by the environment.

A. unrelated people are not likely to have different intelligence
B. close relation usually have similar intelligence
C. the closer the blood relationship between people, the more different they are likely to be in intelligence
D. people who live in close contact with each other are not likely to have similar degrees of intelligence
58. Whether a person can reach his intelligence depends on ________.
A. his reading B. his surroundings C. his parents D. his health
59. The best title for this article would be ________.
A. On Intelligence
B. What Does Intelligence Mean

The idea of fighting a noise
by making more noise sounds strange, .but that's exactly what motor engineers
are doing in
Physicists have known about the technique for a long time. Sound is made up of pressure waves in the air. If two sound waves of the same frequency mix so that the highest point of one wave happens at the same time with the lowest point of the other wave, the result is no sound. Therefore, by producing a perfect copy of the noise and delaying it by half a wave cycle, we can kill the unwanted noise. Using this technique many carmakers are racing to develop noise-killing systems both inside and outside the cars.
Another good thing about the use of noise-killing systems is that it saves the need for a silencer, which not only reduces the weight of a car, but also makes the motor burn less oil and work better.
