　　A landmark is a famous building which makes a place different from the rest of the world．A landmark is often a building in a size which has not been built before, such as the Forbidden City in China．Sometimes, their special styles amaze us, as with the Sydney Opera House．A landmark is an important part of a place．It is important because of its history, or because of the people who built it or the people who visited it．

　　When people think of Paris, they will first think of the Eiffel Tower, a monument (紀(jì)念碑)to the French Revolution．On July 14th 1789, Parisians marched to the Bastille and fought with the King's soldiers to set free prisoners from the dungeons(地牢)．This was the beginning of the French Revolution．The Eiffel Tower was built for the 1889 World's Fair, held to celebrate the French Revolution's Centennial．It would be easy to build another Eiffel Tower elsewhere, but it would not be the same．It has become the symbol of Paris．

　　When people visit New York, they will see the Statue of Liberty, which was designed by a Frenchman, Auguste Bartholdi(1834-1904)．Bartholdi was famous for his art and statues．One evening, at a dinner party, he talked with his friends about how France had helped the United States win its freedom from England almost 100 years earlier．His friends decided Bartholdi should design a large statue of the Roman goddess, Libertas, or Liberty, as a gift to America．In 1884, France gave the statue to the United States．It has been one of America's famous symbols．

The Sydney Opera House is a very famous building in the world. It has become Sydney’s best-known landmark and international symbol. The Opera House with a “sailing roof” was designed by a famous Danish architect（丹麥建筑師）, Utzon. The base（基礎(chǔ)）of the building was started in 1959, years before the designs were finished. Utzon spent four years deigning the Opera House. In 1962, the designs were finalized（定稿）and the construction began. In 1967, they started the decoration inside.
