When my wife, who is Spanish, spent her first winter in London a few years ago, she used to ask me time and again:“Where’s the fog?”Almost all foreigners 1 to find the city full of yellow – grey fog for most of the years.Dickens, who was 2 responsible for painting this 3 in people’s minds, certainly wasn’t joking in those days.In the nineteenth century people used to say 4 someone attempted to kill himself by 5 into the Thames, he would be choked by the fog and poisoned by the terrible 6 of the river before he had time to drown himself. In fact, the situation has 7 only in recent years. When I was a boy in London thirty years ago, I was often unable to see 8 of the road when I left home on winter mornings.

The key steps that have turned London into one of the 9 cities in the world were 10 at the end of the 1950s.But Londoners still find it 11 that fog hardly returns.Actually the 12 took place as a result of two main improvements.Factories were forced to fix equipment for air cleaning 13 close down, and local people were not allowed to 14 coal unless it was smoke – free. But the 15 incredible miracle in London occurred 16 1964 when the Thames Water Authority began to pump vast 17 of dissolved oxygen into the river. 18 , varieties of fish that had gradually disappeared from the Thames since 1800 have 19 , and some are 20 caught by fishermen outside the House of Parliament(議會).

Dear sir,
I read your story (of the 4th February) about the cost of living in the country rather than in the town, and I agree with most of the points that you made. My husband and I lived in the middle of Horlton until two years ago — a seaside town of nearly five hundred thousand people. When my husband stopped working, we moved to our present house in a small village at the foot of Roland Hill, and there is no doubt that our costs are higher now.
I have to do my shopping in small shops, where the food is more expensive than in city supermarkets; it costs more to travel by bus; and because the men who come to mend the television or the washing machine, have to come farther, we have to pay them more.
But it does not cost us much to enjoy what is beautiful in the country; and peace and quiet are cheap. Many people spend a great deal of time and money driving into the country to enjoy the simple things of life; yet we can enjoy them just by going out of the front door. It costs more to live here than it did in Horlton but now life really is worth living.
Yours faithfully.

完形填空

I remember one Thanksgiving when our family had no money and no food, and someone came knocking on our door.A man was 1 there with a huge box of food, a giant turkey and even some 2 to cook it in.I couldn't 3 it.My dad demanded, “Who are you?Where are you from?”

The stranger announced, “I'm here because a friend of yours knows you're in need and that you wouldn't accept 4 help, but I've still brought this for you.Have a great Thanksgiving.”

My father said, “No, no, we 5 accept this.” The stranger replied “You don't have 6 ”, closed the door and left.

Obviously that experience had a profound impact(深刻影響)on my life.I 7 myself that someday I would do well enough financially(財(cái)政的) 8 I could do the same thing for other people.By the time I was eighteen I had created my Thanksgiving ritual(習(xí)慣).I would go out 9 and buy enough food for one or two 10 .Then I would dress like a delivery boy, go to the 11 neighborhood and just knock on a 12 。I always 13 a note that explained my Thanksgiving experience 14 a kid.The note said, “All that I ask for 15 is that you take good enough care of 16 so that someday you can do the same thing for someone else.” I have got more 17 from this annual ritual than that I've ever gained.

Years ago I was in New York City with my new wife during Thanksgiving. She was sad because we were not with our family. 18 she would be home decorating the house for Christmas, but we were 19 in a hotel room. When I told her what I always do on Thanksgiving, she got excited.

We packed enough food for seven families for thirty days and went to buildings where half a dozen people lived in one room with no electricity and no heat in winter surrounded by rats, cockroaches(蟑螂)and the smell of urine(尿).It was both an 20 realization for the people living this way and a truly fulfilling experience to make even a small difference.
