In the course of working my way through school, I took many jobs I would rather forget. But none of these jobs was as dreadful as my job in an apple plant. The work was hard; the pay was poor; and, most of all, the working conditions were terrible.

First of all, the job made huge demands on my strength. For ten hours a night, I took boxes that rolled down a metal track and piled them onto a truck. Each box contained twelve heavy bottles of apple juice.I once figured out that I was lifting an average of twelve tons of apple juice every night.

I would not have minded the difficulty of the work so much if the pay had not been so poor.I was paid the lowest wage of that time-two dollars an hour.Because of the low pay, I felt eager to get as much as possible.I usually worked twelve hours a night but did not take home much more than $100 a week.

But even more than the low pay, what made me unhappy was the working conditions.During work I was limited to two ten-minute breaks and an unpaid half hour for lunch. Most of my time was spent outside loading trucks with those heavy boxes in near-zero-degree temperatures. The steel floors of the trucks were like ice, which made my feet feel like stone. And after the production line shut down at night and most people left, I had to spend two hours alone cleaning the floor.

I stayed on the job for five months, all the while hating the difficulty of the work, the poor money, and the conditions under which I worked.By the time I left, I _________.

You don’t need every word to understand the meaning of what you read.In fact, too much emphasis on separate words both and reduces your comprehension.

First, any habit which slows down your silent reading to the speed at which you speak, or read aloud, is inefficient. If you point to each word as you read, or move your head, or form the words with your lips, you read poorly.Less obvious habits also hold back reading efficiency. One is “saying” each word silently by moving your tongue or throat; another is “hearing” each word as you read.

These are habits which should have been outgrown long ago.The beginning reader is learning how letters can make words, how written words are pronounced, and how sentences are put together.Your reading purpose is quite different; it is to understand meaning.

It has been supposed that up to 75% of the words in English sentences are not really necessary for ?expressing? the meaning. The secret of silent reading is to find out those key words and phrases which carry the thought, and to pay less attention to words which exist only for grammatical completeness.

An efficient reader can grasp the meaning from a page at least twice as fast as he can read the page aloud. He takes in a whole phrase or thought unit at a time.If he “says” or “hears” words to himself, they are selected ones, said for emphasis.

American government has suggested a new plan to increase the study of foreign languages in schools.

Research has shown that childhood is a better time than manhood to learn foreign languages. However, ________ learn only English.Less than one third of American elementary schools teach foreign languages.Only 44 percent of American high school students take a foreign language. And 70 percent of them are learning Spanish. What’s more, the United States doesn’t have enough foreign teachers.

The plan calls for teaching more children foreign languages, as early as the age of four. Most of the new teaching would be in languages not widely taught now in American schools. These include Arabic, Chinese, Farsi(波斯語), Hindi(北印度語)and Russian. It also aims to increase foreign language instruction in colleges and graduate schools. The hope is to bring more foreign language speakers into government service.

Administration officials will ask for 114 million dollars in 2007 to start the program. The money would be used to help foreign-language students pay for their educations. The plan also calls for sending more American students to other countries to study. And it calls for bringing more foreign language teaching assistants to the United States.

the ground that belonged to us. We looked and looked. Finally Mike cried, "I know! It's my shadow on the

Nowadays ,with the growing popularity of computers, teachers, students and their parents are paying less and less attention to handwriting.

According to a recent survey, about 85. 5 percent of middle school students think that their handwriting is poor. Yet for various reasons, many students don't want to improve their handwriting. 51. 5 percent of the students think that they can just use a computer, so there is no need to waste time improving their handwriting, and 32. 3 percent believe that they are so busy with the study that they do not have time to practise. 10. 9 percent think that practising handwriting is useless.

As the saying goes, writing style shows the man. Beautiful and neat handwriting is beneficial, especially for middle school students. Therefore, in my opinion, more emphasis should be placed on this aspect in future.
