Now, we know that if we do not get enough vitamins, we are at risk of developing a number of diseases. As a result, vitamin supplements(補(bǔ)品),though expensive, are popular with people who worry that they are not getting enough vitamins from the foods they eat. But contrary to what many people think, medical experts have found little evidence that most supplements do anything to improve health or protect against disease.

In fact, medical experts warn that taking too many of some vitamins can be harmful. For example, too much vitamin E can cause bleeding. People should discuss what vitamins they take with their doctors, as some vitamins can produce harmful side effects when mixed with medicines.

Experts, however, do say that sometimes vitamins can help prevent disease. People who know they lack a particular vitamin should take vitamin supplements. Some older adults, for example, may not have enough vitamin B-twelve. This is because, as people get older, their body loses its ability to take it from foods. Also, people who spend much time inside may need some extra vitamin D as the skin makes this vitamin from sunlight.

Different vitamins are found in different foods. Vitamin A is found in fish liver oil. It also is in the yellow part of eggs. Sweet potatoes, carrots and other darkly colored fruits and vegetables contain substances that the body can change into vitamin A. Vitamin B-twelve is found in green leafy vegetables and other foods, like fruits. Vitamin K can be found in pork products.

In fact, for most people, a balanced diet can ensure enough of the vitamins our bodies need. So, it is important for us to eat a mixture of foods every day to ensure that we get enough vitamins our bodies need.

1.Vitamin supplements are popular with people because ________.

A.people mistakenly think that they are good for their health

B.they contain more vitamins than the foods people eat

C.food does not provide enough vitamins people need

D.people fear that a lack of vitamins will lead to disease

2.From the passage, we can learn that medical experts advise people _________.

A.never to take any vitamin supplements

B.to depend only on food for their vitamins

C.not to take any vitamins together with medicines

D.to consult doctors before taking vitamin supplements

3.For people who lack Vitamin B-twelve, they can eat more from _______.

A. sweet potatoes   B. pork products   C. green leafy vegetables  D. eggs

42. What would be the best title of the passage?

A. Getting enough vitamins through a balanced diet.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2010年兩省一市四校聯(lián)考第四次高考模擬考試(英語(yǔ)) 題型:閱讀理解

Agence Rrance-Presse--- French doctors this week carried out the world’s first operation on a human in zero gravity, using a specially adapted aircraft to create conditions in space.
During a three-hour flight from Bordeaux in southwest France, the team of surgeons and anesthetists (麻醉師) successfully removed a benign tumor (良性瘤) from the forearm of a 46-year-old volunteer. The experiment was part of a program backed by the European Space Agency to develop techniques for performing robotic surgery aboard the International Space Station or at a future Moon base.
“Now we know that a human being can be operated on in space without too many difficulties,” says the team leader Dr. Dominique Martin.
Under normal ground conditions, the operation would be performed under a local anesthetic. Without gravity, the surgeon’s work is harder and the patient’s body reacts differently. Blood doesn’t pump in the same way.
The custom-designed Airbus 300 aircraft performed a series of parabolic swoops (拋物線飛行), each creating between 20 seconds of weightlessness. The process was repeated 32 times.
Fixed inside a custom-made operating block, three surgeons and two anesthetists worked during these periods, with their instruments held in place with magnets around the patient’s bed. The next part of the program is to carry out a remote-controlled operation using a robot controlled from the ground by satellite. This experiment should take place within a year, Martin says.
Anesthetist Dr. Laurent de Coninek says that zero-gravity surgery offers huge promise for space exploration, although it would at first be limited to treating simple injuries. Today more than 400 people have already traveled into space. The chances of injuries occurring during missions will become even greater and to bring a wounded person back to the earth for treatment is both risky for them and expensive.
67. What would be the best title for the test?
A. A Special Operation for Doctors            B. First Operation on the Moon
C. World’s First Operation in Zero Gravity      D. An Important Experiment for Doctors
68. What’s the purpose of the operation?
A. To have an experiment on space operation.    B. To cure the patient.
C. To do it at the request of the patient.               D. To reduce the danger of operation on earth.
69. It is difficult for doctors to do operations in space because________________.
A. the patient’s illness will be more serious           B. the patient has no feeling about pain
C. the patient’s body reacts differently               D. the patient’s flood will stop flowing
70. The last paragraph mainly wants to tell readers________________.
A. there are many people injured in space           B. it is necessary to do the experiment
C. it is risky to travel in space                             D. there is no need to bring patients in space to the earth

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:四川省成都市七校協(xié)作體09-10學(xué)年度高一第二學(xué)期期中聯(lián)考英語(yǔ) 題型:閱讀理解

We need to make better use of our resources. In developing countries we have more than enough, if we are less wasteful in our ways. Fortunately, we can improve. The challenge lies not so much with ‘technical fixes’ but with our approach to our world around us. In the recent past we were in a “Wild West” economy, supposing that there would always be enough resources. Now we know there are no new Earth to explore and exploit; one image to illustrate this is to think of Earth as a spaceship, where most materials have to be recycled. For us, “moving on” will be a case of leaving behind the throwaway society and advancing to a conserver society.

To qualify as citizens of a conserver society, we must change traditional attitudes and thinking. We need to recognize that there is not very often such a thing as “waste”, rather, there are materials which sometimes end up in the wrong place. The change has already begun. The European steel industry reuses scrap(廢棄的)metal, resulting in an energy saving of up to 50% . Recycling a glass container saves only 18%; but, in parts of the United States, a citizen buying a bottle of soda or beer now pays a deposit against return of the empty bottle.

If all drink containers in the USA were to be reused, the annual saving would be 0.5 million tons glass, plus about 50 million barrels of oil used in production processes. In Japan, OPEC promoted an increase in recycling of raw materials from 16% to 48% in just five years. In Norway, the price of a new car includes a disposal cost element of about 100 dollars, redeemable(可換成現(xiàn)款的)when the junked car is turned in at an approved receiving center.

Major new businesses are trying to exploit waste chemicals and oil. The Chinese claim to reuse 2.5 million tons of scrap iron and at least one million tons of waste paper each year. In the main, the conserver society depends on the commitment of individuals. But they can be encouraged by government incentive(鼓勵(lì)) and punishment, which should apply at least as strongly to industry and other commercial interests.

73  Which of the following best expresses the meaning of “a conserver society” in the second paragraph?

A. A wasteful society.

B. A society which thinks of  ways of recycling waste materials.

C. A society which keeps everything.

D. A society which saves electricity.

74  In the last paragraph, the author suggests governments _______.

A. depends on individuals to find ways of conserving energy.

B. find ways of encouraging those industries and individuals who conserve energy and of punishing those who don’t.

C. depend on companies to find ways of saving energy and rewarding workers

D. help establish businesses that will exploit waste materials

75  In this passage the author _______.

A. explains that meaning of the “Wild West” economy

B. tells us what recycled materials are.

C. teaches us how to recycle materials.

D. recommend a change in our use of resources strongly
