Film cameras and digital cameras work in a similar way.

Film cameras

After all, a film camera is basically a light – proof (不透光的) box. It has a lens (鏡頭) system to focus light onto the film at the back of the camera.

Let’s suppose that we are outside on a beautiful summer day trying to take a picture of the family dog. We are using a film camera. We finally get the dog to lie still. You point the camera at him. What happens? Light goes into the camera lens and hits the shutter. In other words, nothing happens yet. Now let’s say that the dog looks really cute and you decide to snap a picture. What happens? When you press the button, the shutter opens for a very short period of time. A small amount of light passes through and hits the film at the back of the camera. This creates an upside-down and reversed (反向的)image on the film.

When you finish the roll of the film, you can take it to the photo shop to develop it and you will have a great picture of your dog!

Cameras come with different lens lengths. Why does it matter? Many small cameras have shorter focal lengths, which means that there is a small distance between the lens and the place where the light focuses at the back of the camera. This gives you a large view of the area you are taking a picture of. Lenses with a long focal length show a smaller area but allow you to focus on distant objects and make them bigger. They are often called telephoto lenses. A good example of a long focus lens is one that is used by sports photographers to get photos of football players as if they were standing right beside them.

Digital cameras

In digital cameras, the light falls not on film but onto a sensor (傳感器) called a CCD (Charge Coupled Device). This digitally converts(轉(zhuǎn)變) light and color into a digital information or pixels (象素). The CCD is the heart of any digital camera and usually the most expensive part ---- depending on how good it is.

Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.Both digital and film cameras focus light onto the film.

       B.All cameras have a sensor.

C.Digital cameras and film cameras have something in common. .

D.Small cameras usually have longer focal lengths.

In the “Film cameras” part, you fail to take the picture of the dog because _____.

A.light goes into the camera lens and hits the shutter

B.you haven’t aimed the camera at the dog

C.the image of the dog is not created

D.the sensor fails to convert light and color into a digital information

The main reason that sports photographers can get clear and big photos of players is that _ ___.

A.they use digital cameras  B.the lens of their cameras is excellent

C.their focus lenses are short      D.their focus lenses are long

Generally speaking, a digital camera’s price is ____.

A.closely related to the quality of the CCD

B.irrelevant to the quality of the CCD

       C.closely related to the lens

       D.irrelevant to the lens

The resounding film Avatar has been very popular in the UK and around the world, becoming the fastest film ever to earn $1bn(7bn yuan) in ticket sales.

But as well as being an entertaining feast for the eyes, the sci-fi epic(敘事詩)also introduces the audience to a brand new language invented especially for the film.

The movie is set on an alien planet called Pandora which is inhabited by many strange species. The most humanoid of the planet’s inhabitants are the Na’vi, and it is the struggle between the Na’vi  and human invader that forms the main story of the film.

The film has been released in 2D and 3D versions.

In order to add a sense of reality to his vision of an alien race the film’s director James Cameron asked a professor of language form the University of Southern California to invent a language for the Na’vi.

Professor Paul Frommer worked with James Cameron for four years to build upon the original 30 words or so that the director had already come up with for the language.

According to Professor Frommer, the most important aspect of the Na’  vi language was that it could be pronounced.

“This is an alien language but obviously it has to be spoken by human actors,” Professor Frommer told the BBC, “it has to be sounds that human beings are comfortable producing.”

The language currently has around 1,000 words but Professor Frommer hopes to expand it in possible sequels(續(xù)集)to the film and in video games.

The professor hopes that one day his creation will have a high level of the Klingon alien language from the Star Trek films.

“There’s going to be one less boy in the room!” The words rang in my ears as the criminal(罪犯) pointed his gun against my head. The floodgates opened and tears ran down my face. No one in the courtroom(法庭) moved. Everyone was held silent with fear. A few seconds passed and the criminal put down his gun, turning his back on me.

“Cut!” the director shouted with joy. One take! We had done the scene in just one take. Then all the people who acted in the film went off for lunch.

I got my food and joined them, and the criminal, who had moments before been so scary, took his seat beside me and told us many funny jokes. A table of adults surrounded me, but I was never uncomfortable talking with strangers. I worked with these people and they worked with me. We talked, we laughed, we got to know each other and sometimes we became friends. At the end of the day we all went our separate ways, but we had been drawn close by working together to make this play.

After the show was broadcast, my friends asked if I had been scared of the criminal. At first this sounded funny. He was, after all, a kind and intelligent man. Then I realized that they didn’t see that side of him. Television and films are about creating an alternate(交替的) life that appears real even if for a while. We had been successful in doing that. Even my friends, who knew the real me, were drawn in the make-believe world of our story.

Acting has helped me to feel comfortable in my own skin and in communicating with others. I feel relaxed during interviews and when leadership opportunities come. Change is not threatening(威脅) to me, and I am grateful for the chance to learn and to grow in knowledge and experience in my life.

In the film, what was the manner of the author’s character when facing the criminal?

A. Brave and calm.                B. Anxious and terrified.

3.

When they had lunch, the author        .

A. was too afraid to sit beside the criminal

B. was unwilling to talk with the others

C. was laughing to tears by the criminal’s jokes

Why could the author understand his friends’ questions?

A. He had a close relationship with his friends.

B. The actors performed so well that the audience accepted the story as true.

C. He thought it was normal for the audience to question the actors.

D. He thought they didn’t understand the process of film acting.

5.

It can be inferred from the passage that        .

A. the author felt lucky to play in the film
