Scientists Alan M.Goldberg and Thomas Hartung describe recent advances in replacing the use of animals in toxicology(毒物學(xué))testing.Improvements in cell and tissue culture technologies, for example, allow a growing number of tests to be performed on human cells alone.Computer models are becoming increasingly complex and many could one day become more accurate than trials in living animals.
Since the late 1990s,Huntingdon Life Sciences--a company that conducts testing of substances on animals conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration—has become a proving ground for aggressive strategies by animal-rights militants (好戰(zhàn)分子).At a hearing,a Senate.committee listened to testimony(證詞) against Huntingdon employees and financial institutions providing services to the company. One experimentation witness at the hearing insisted that any means necessary were justified(辯護(hù)) to spare animals’ lives;he has previously accepted the idea of murder to that end.
Use of animals in testing and in biomedical research continues to be necessary in many instances and is ethically(倫理道德地)preferable to experimenting on humans or giving up cures that could save human lives. But for the sake of people and animals alike, the development and acceptance of animal substitutes deserve enthusiastic support.
In some instances, substitutes are already thought as good or better than animals, but supervising agencies(監(jiān)督機(jī)構(gòu))have yet to catch up.In both the European Union and the U.S.,scientists and companies wanting to use the new alternative tests complain that regulatory standards for proving a drug or chemical to be safe for humans force the continued use of animals.Thus,animal-loving Americans might turn to persuading the EPA and the FDA to speed validation(確認(rèn))of new methods so that they can be more widely employed. And animal advocates(保護(hù)者) who want to influence business could consider investing in the small biotech’s and large pharmaceutical(藥品的) companies that are working to develop alternatives to animals in research.

Cutting global warming pollution would not only make the planet healthier, it would make people healthier too, new research suggests.
Cutting carbon dioxide emissions could save millions of lives, mostly by reducing preventable deaths from heart and lung diseases, according to studies released Wednesday and published in a special issue of The Lancet British medical journal.
“Relying on fossil fuels leads to unhealthy lifestyles, increasing our chances for getting sick and in some cases takes years from our lives,” US Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a telecast (電視廣播) briefing from her home state of Kansas. “As greenhouse gas emissions go down, so do deaths from cardiovascular (心血管的) and respiratory diseases (呼吸疾病). This is not a small effect.”
Instead of looking at the health ills caused by future global warming, as past studies have done, this research looks at the immediate benefits of doing something about the problem, said Linda Birnbaum, director of the US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
Some possible benefits seemed highly speculative (投機(jī)的,推測(cè)的), the researchers conceded (承認(rèn),給予), based on people driving less and walking and cycling more. Other proposals studied were more concrete and achievable, such as reducing cook stoves that burn dung (糞便), charcoal and other polluting fuels in the developing world.
And cutting carbon dioxide emissions also makes the air cleaner, reducing lung damage for millions of people, doctors said.
“Here are ways you can attack major health problems at the same time as dealing with climate change," said lead author Dr. Paul Wilkinson, an environmental epidemiologist at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Wilkinson said the individual studies came up with numbers of premature deaths prevented or extra years of life added for certain places.
For example, switching to low-polluting cars in London and Delhi, India, would save 160 lost years of life in London and nearly 1,700 in Delhi for every million residents, one study found. But if people also drove less and walked or biked more, those extra saved years would soar (高聳,高漲) to more than 7,300 years in London and 12,500 years in Delhi because of less heart disease.
小題1:What does the passage mainly about?
A.How can people live longer.
B.Cutting carbon dioxide emissions saves life.
C.Global warming threatens people’s lives
D.People should stop relying on fossil fuels
小題2:The new research differs from past studies in that ________.
A.it focuses on the immediate benefits of cutting carbon dioxide emissions
B.it studies the bad effects arising from future global warming
C.it is believed by most people
D.it mainly targets at developing countries
小題3:According to Kathleen Sebelius ________.
A.sometimes it takes years to see the bad effects caused by consuming fossil fuels
B.without greenhouse gas emissions, people would not die of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases
C.the main reason why people get sick is that they rely on fossil fuels
D.death from cardiovascular and respiratory diseases are closely related to greenhouse gas emissions
小題4:It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A.London and Delhi have already benefited from reducing greenhouse gas emissions
B.switching to low-polluting cars would save 160 lives in London every year
C.walking and biking instead of driving will reduce the chance of heart disease
D.a(chǎn)ttacking health problems and dealing with climate change are contradictory

Television is a relatively stable advertising medium. In many ways, the television ads today are almost the same to those two decades ago. Most television ads still feature actors, still run 30 or 60 seconds, and still show a product. However, the different medium of the Internet causes unique challenges to advertisers, forcing them to adapt their practices and techniques.
In the early days of Internet marketing, online advertisers used banner (框式廣告) and pop-up ads (彈出式廣告) to attract customers. These techniques reached large audiences, led to many sales leads, and came at a low cost. However, a small number of Internet users began to consider these advertising techniques annoying. Yet because marketing strategies relying heavily on banners and pop-ups produced results, companies invested growing amounts of money into purchasing these ad types. As consumers became more complicated, frustration with these online advertising techniques grew. Independent programmers began to develop tools that blocked banner and pop-up ads.
A major development in online marketing came with the introduction of pay-per-click ads. Unlike banner or pop-up ads, which originally required companies to pay every time a website visitor saw an ad, pay-per-click ads allowed companies to pay only when an interested potential customer clicked on an ad. More importantly, however, these ads are not affected by the pop-up and banner blockers. As a result of these advantages and the incredible growth in the use of search engines, which provide excellent places for pay-per-click advertising, a great number of companies began turning to pay-per-click marketing. However, as with the banner and pop-up ads, pay-per-click ads came with their shortcomings. When companies began pouring billions of dollars into this emerging medium, online advertising specialists started to notice the presence of what would later be called click fraud (欺詐): representatives of a company with no interest in the product advertised by a competitor click on the competitor’s ads simply to increase the marketing cost of the competitor. Click fraud grew so rapidly that marketers sought to diversify (擺脫) their online positions away from pay-per-click marketing through new mediums.
Although pay-per-click advertising remains a common and effective advertising tool, marketers adapted yet again to the changing elements of the Internet by adopting new techniques such as pay-per-performance advertising. As the pace of the Internet’s evolution increases, it seems all the more likely that advertising successfully on the Internet will require a strategy that avoids constancy (持續(xù)性) and welcomes change.
小題1:What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The pace of the Internet’s evolution is increasing and will only increase in the future.
B.Internet advertising fails to reach Internet users, causing ads to be blocked.
C.The Internet has experienced dramatic changes in short periods of time.
D.Rapid development of the Internet calls for new advertising strategies and mediums.
小題2:As an advertising medium, the television and the Internet mainly differ in ________.
A.the type of individual each medium reaches
B.whether the medium is interactive
C.the pace at which the medium develops
D.the cost of advertising with each medium
小題3:According to the passage, which of the following is a typical click fraud?
A.Using software to block competitors’ advertisements.
B.Clicking on the pay-per-click ads of competitors.
C.Clicking on the banner advertisements of opponent companies.
D.Using search engine to attack the pages of competitors.
小題4:What does the author imply about the future of pay-per-performance advertising?
A.It will eventually become less popular just like other forms of Internet advertising.
B.It will not face shortcomings due to its differing approach to online marketing.
C.Internet users will develop free software to block its effectiveness.
D.Although it improves on pay-per-click advertising, it still suffers from click fraud.

Robots are smart. With their computer brains, they help people work in dangerous places or do difficult jobs. Some robots do regular jobs. Bobby, the robot mail carrier, brings mail to a large office building in Washington, D.C. He is one of 250 robot mail carriers in the United States. Mr. Leachim, who weights two hundred pounds and is six feet tall, has some advantages as a teacher. One is that he does not forget details. He knows each child’s name, their parents’ names, and what each child knows and needs to know. In addition, he knows each child’s pets and hobbies. Mr. Leachim does not make mistakes. Each child goes and tells him his or her name, then dials an identification (識(shí)別) number. His computer brain puts the child’s voice and number together. He identifies the child with no mistakes.
Another advantage is that Mr. Leachim is flexible. If the children need more time to do their lessons they can move switches. In this way they can repeat Mr. Leachim’s lesson over and over again. When the children do a good job, he tells them something interesting about their hobbies. At the end of the lesson the children switch Mr. Leachim off.

Most animals have little connection with animals of a different kind, unless they hunt them for food. Sometimes, however, two kinds of animals come together in a partnership(伙伴關(guān)系) which does good to both of them. You may have noticed some birds sitting on the back of sheep. This is not because they want a ride, but because they find easy food in the parasites(寄生蟲)on sheep. The sheep allow the birds to do so because they remove the cause of discomfort. So although they can manage without each other, they do better together.
Sometimes an animal has a plant partner. The relationship develops until the two partners cannot do without each other. This is so in the corals(珊瑚)of the sea. In their skins they have tiny plants which act as “dustman”, taking some of the waste products from the coral and giving in return oxygen which the animal needs to breathe. If the plants are killed, or are even prevented from light so that they cannot live normally, the corals will die.
小題1:Some birds like to sit on a sheep because _________.
A.they can eat its parasites
B.they consider the sheep as their shelter
C.they enjoy traveling with the sheep
D.they find the position most comfortable
小題2:The underlined word “they” in the first paragraph refers to _______.
A.birds and parasitesB.sheep, birds and parasites
C.parasites and sheepD.birds and sheep
小題3:It can be learnt from the text that the coral depends on the plants for ________.
A.comfortB.lightC.oxygenD.food
小題4:What does the second paragraph mainly discuss?
A.Some plants depend on each other for food.
B.Some animals and plants develop their relationship easily.
C.Some animals and plants depend on each other for existence.
D.Some animals live better together.

To master a language one must be able to speak and understand the spoken language as well as to read and write.Lenin and his wife Krupskaya translated a long English book into Russian. But when they went to England in 1980, English people couldn’t understand what was said to them. These days more foreigners are coming to China and more and more Chinese are going out to foreign countries to work or study. So the spoken language is becoming more and more important.Speaking, of course, can’t go without listening. If you want to pronounce a word correctly, first you must hear it correctly. The sounds of the Chinese and English language are not exactly the same.If you don’t listen carefully, you’ll find it difficult or even impossible to understand the native speakers.
Well, what about writing? Like speaking, it’s to exchange ideas.People generally use shorter words and shorter sentences in their writing. The important thing is to make your idea in your head and then to write it in clear lively language
Chinese students read far too slowly. If you read fast, you understand better. If you read too slowly, by the time you have reached the end of a page you have forgotten what the beginning is about. When you meet with new words, don’t look them up in the dictionary.Guess the meaning from the context. You may not guess quite correctly the first time, but as new words come up again and again in different contexts, their meaning will become clearer and clearer. If you look up every word, you’ll never finish a book.
Students of a foreign language need a particular knowledge, the knowledge of the life, history and geography of the people whose language they’re studying. They should study these subjects in the foreign language, not only in translation. In this way one can kill two birds with one stone: learn a foreign language and get some knowledge of the foreign country at the same time.

In nature, you may see many insects and animals of different colors. Have you ever wondered why?
Locusts (蝗蟲)are super delicious food for birds, but it is not always an easy job for birds to catch them. It is neither because locusts are good jumpers or runners nor because they are smarter than their enemies(敵人). The reason is that the colors of locusts change with the colors of crops (莊稼). When crops are young, locusts look green. But when autumn comes, locusts change to the yellow and brown color as crops do.
Brown bears, tigers and other animals move quietly through forests. They can’t be seen easily by their enemies. This is because they have colors similar to the trees. For the same reason, polar bears that live on a land of snow and ice are white. Butterflies (蝴蝶)and bees living among the flowers are colorful like flowers. Soil insects are mostly dark-colored and they live under the soil in a dark and wet environment. However, insects with colors different from plants can easily be found and eaten by others. So in order to survive, they have to hide themselves in the daytime and appear only at night.
Have you ever noticed some even stranger acts(行為)? The ink fish in the sea can send out some very black ink when it faces danger. As the ink spreads over, its enemies will find themselves in a dark world. At the same time the ink fish immediately swims away. That is how it keeps itself safe though it is not strong at all.
小題1:According to the passage, most soil insects ______
A.do not have bright colors
B.change their colors with the soil
C.do not live in a dark and wet environment.
D.eat colorful insects like butterflies and bees.
小題2:What’s the meaning of the underlined word “survive” in the passage?
A.繁殖B.產(chǎn)卵C.覓食D.生存
小題3:What is the main idea of this passage?
A.Some insects and animals have different skills.
B.Some insects and animals are cleverer than we think.
C.Some insects and animals use colors to protect themselves.
D.Some insects and animals can get used to the environment easily.

The State Council declared Wednesday it would restart China's nuclear power program, ending the hiatus(中斷)in nuclear construction since Japan's Fukushima nuclear disaster last year.
China has been the most courageous country in building nuclear power, with the largest number of plants currently under construction. Nuclear power is facing a tough time in developed countries. The Japanese public is demanding the closure of all the country's nuclear power plants. China is at the forefront of nuclear power development. But it has been forced into this position.
Rapid economic development coupled with improvements in people's life both demand more electricity. It is impossible to exploit fossil resources forever as the supply of coal, oil and natural gas is limited. China has no choice but to develop nuclear power.
China must be the safest user of nuclear power. It should become a leading country in developing nuclear power technologies and increasing the world's knowledge of nuclear power.
It needs to do at least two things. First, it needs to promote safety in nuclear power plants, based on the technologies of the West. The former Soviet Union, the US and Japan all had severe nuclear accidents, proving there are risks. China should try to remove these risks.
Second, China should establish effective communication mechanisms(機(jī)制)between the government, power plants and the public. It's wrong to think the government can control every aspect of nuclear power plant construction.
The opposition to nuclear power program in developed countries has prevented them from building new plants, but they already have many. These governments are reluctant to close these plants despite strong opposition, because they cannot find better substitutes.
Nuclear power only occupies 1.8 percent of China's current electricity grid(輸電網(wǎng)), much lower than the proportion in many developed countries. China's nuclear power plan should introduce the advantages of the technologies of other countries and also be creative in providing security. Its space technology is not the most advanced, but its launch safety measures have proven to be among the best.
China's high-profile high-speed railway development has drawn a lot of controversy, as will the active attitude towards developing nuclear power. But China cannot just copy what the developed countries have done. The development of nuclear power must be unique to China and it must be a ground-breaking success. But now, the real test lies ahead.
小題1:In the third paragraph the writer focuses on ______.
A.the reason why China is to develop nuclear power
B.the difficulty China has in developing nuclear power
C.the measures China will take to develop nuclear power
D.the benefits China will have by developing nuclear power
小題2:What attitude do people in developed countries have towards nuclear power program?
A.Supportive. B.Opposed. C.Indifferent.D.Objective.
小題3:. If the Chinese government is to develop nuclear power, it needs to ______.
A.copy exactly what the developed countries have done
B.depend entirely on domestic scientists and technologies
C.a(chǎn)void people’s involvement in nuclear power plant construction
D.do everything in its power to guarantee safety in nuclear power plants
小題4:What is the future of China’s nuclear power program according to the text?
A.It will be unique but can hardly pass too many tests.
B.It will be full of controversy but carried out firmly.
C.It will be on a smooth way to a ground-breaking success.
D.It will receive much opposition from developed countries.

Human cloning technology could be used to reserve heart attacks. Scientists believe that they may be able to treat heart attack by cloning their healthy heart cells and injecting them into the areas of the heart that have been damaged, and other problems may be solved if human cloning and its technology are not forbidden.
With cloning, infertile couples could have children. Current treatments for infertility, in terms of percentages, are not very successful. Couples go through physical and emotionally painful procedures for a small chance of having children. Many couples run out of time and money without successfully having children. Human cloning could make it possible for many more infertile couples to have children than ever before.
We should be able to clone the bone marrow(骨髓) for children and adults suffering from leukemia(白血病). This is expected to be one of the first benefits to come from cloning technology. We may learn how to switch cells on and off through cloning and thus be able to cure cancer.
Cloning technology can be used to test for and perhaps cure gene-related diseases. The above is just a few examples of what human cloning technology can do for mankind. This new technology promises unprecedented (前所未有的)advancement in medicine if people will release their fears and let the benefit begin.
小題1:What does the underlined word “infertile” (paragraph 2) most probably mean?
A.with physical and emotional problems
B.short of time and money
C.unable to give birth to children
D.separated from each other for a long time
小題2:According to the text, one of the first expected benefits from cloning technology is in ______.
A.the treatment of mental diseases
B.the reserve of heart diseases
C.the cure of gene-related diseases
D.the bearing of babies
小題3:According to the writer, the main problem with the development of human cloning technology is that__________.
A.it has brought about benefits so far
B.it may be out of human control
C.people still know little about it
D.people are afraid of such technology
