The British steamship “Titanic,” sank after striking ice in North Atlantic Ocean, and killed more than 15,000.
The Titanic hearings(聽證會) were conducted by a special subcommittee of the Senate Commerce Committee and chaired by Senator William A. Smith. The hearings began on April 19,1912, at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. A total of 82 witnesses testified(作證) about ice warnings that were ignored, the inadequate number of lifeboats, the ship’s speed, the failure of nearby ships to respond to the Titanic’s distress calls, and the treatment of passengers of different classes. The hearings concluded on May 28, 1912, when Senator Smith visited the Titanic’s sister ship, Olympic, at port in New York, to interview some of its crew. When the Titanic sank, the Olympic was about 500 miles away.
The subcommittee hearing transcripts(手稿), which were published in 1912, are over1,100 pages long. Spawned by the popularity of the movie on the Titanic, a paperback reprint of the hearings was published in 1998 by Pocket Books. This paperback is an exact reprint of the hearing transcripts.
