The English and the Continentals

　　In England everything is the other way round．On Sundays on the Continent even the poorest person puts on his best suit, tries to look respectable, and at the same time the life of the country becomes gay and cheerful; in England even the richest lord(勛爵)or motor-manufacturer dresses in some peculiar(特別的, 罕見的)rags, does not shave, and the country becomes dull and sad．On the Continent there is one subject which should be avoided－the weather; in England, if you do not repeat the phrase “l(fā)ovely day, isn’t it?” at least two hundred times a day, you are considered a bit dull．On the Continent people use a fork as though a fork were a shovel(鏟子); in England they turn it upside down and push everything－including peas－on top of it．

　　On the Continent almost every nation whether little or great has openly declared at one time or another that it is superior to all other nations; the English fight heroic wars to combat these dangerous ideas without ever mentioning which is really the most superior race in the world．Continental people are sensitive and touchy(易生氣的); the English take everything with a sense of humor－they are only offended if you tell them that they have no sense of humor．On the Continent the population consists of a small percentage of criminals, a small percentage of honest people and the rest are a vague transition(過渡, 轉(zhuǎn)變)between the two; in England you find a small percentage of criminals and the rest are honest people．On the other hand, people on the Continent either tell you the truth or lie; in England they hardly ever lie, but they would not dream of telling you the truth．

The "Thumbs-Up"

　　While Western culture has become used to the thumbs-up as a good signal(probably coming from World War II pilots using the signal to show that they were "good to go" with ground crews), there are cultures where a thumbs-up may land you in trouble．In West Africa, as well as Greece, Italy and Middle East, the thumbs-up is pretty much the biggest insult(侮辱)．

　　Rather more interesting is a thumbs-up in Germany and in parts of Japan－they just see it as the hand signal for the number one．

The "A-OK"

　　This sign is mainly used by divers(潛水員)to mean "OK"(to prevent being confused with the thumbs-up sign, which means "rise")．Basically the meaning comes out as "great", or "completely fine"．However, in a few countries in Europe, people may think you抮e telling them that you think they抮e a 'zero挘?/P>

The "V Sign"

　　The sign comes in two formats：one with the palm(手掌)faced outwards, and one with the palm inwards．In America they mean the same thing －"victory"．However, if the outside of your hand is facing your target(目標(biāo)), you抮e giving somebody a long-built insult in Great Britain and many English-speaking countries such as Australia, Ireland and New Zealand．Winston Churchill famously used the "incorrect" version of the V sign during the early years of the war, turning the outside inside later．The V sign is also considered rude in Italy．

The "Corna"

　　The corna hand gesture has most recently been adopted by fans of rock and heavy metal music．Nowadays many Americans use the gesture simply to mean "rock on", or in support of the University of Texas in Austin(known as the "Hook抏m Horns")．Today it is still popular in Spain, Brazil and Slovakia．Historically, however, the symbol possibly dates back to Ancient Greece．

                                                          The Value of Tears
     Tears can ruin make-up, bring conversation to a stop, and give you a runny nose. Tears leave you
embarrassed and without energy. Still, crying is a fact of life, and your tears are very useful. Even when
you're not crying, they make a film over the eye's surface.   1   
     When tears fall, they reduce stress. But we tend to fight them for all sorts of reasons. "People worry

consists of giving people permission to cry.   3   Patients practice crying just to become used to expressing emotions. She suggests safe , private  places  to  cry , like  under the  bedcovers or in the car.
     Crying is a way of reducing tension, but people don't like it when others cry because it makes them
tense.   4   And they'll do just about anything to make you stop.
     In certain situations, such as at work, tears are not appropriate. It's good not to cry during a tense
business discussion.   5   You should also act out the whole situation again and be as noisy and angry as
you Iike. It will help you feel better. "And,"  she adds, "once your tears have taken away the stress , you
can begin to think calmly of ways to deal with the problem. "
     Tears are a sign of our ability to feel. If you find yourself near someone crying, deal with it. And never
be afraid to cry yourself.
