On Oct4,2011 , I phone 4s made its international appearance at the press conference claimed by the Iphone cooperation . Ever since then , Iphone4s has become a hot cake and even made a fashion around the globe. Meanwhile , many new expressions come about in relationship with this type of high-tech products. “Jailbreak” is one of them.
“ Jailbreak” means to unlock the operating system of a mobile phone or other device so that it can run software which it is not normally authorized to use because of restrictions imposed(實施) by the device's manufacturer.
If someone jailbreaks a smartphone, tablet computer or other device(設(shè)備), they use a special piece of software in order to remove the restrictions imposed by the manufacturer on the kind of applications that can be downloaded and run on the device. The concept of jailbreaking is most often associated with products from Apple Inc, such as the iPhone, iPod and iPad, which routinely restrict the user to applications licensed exclusively(獨家地) by Apple and purchased via its App Store. As well as wanting to lift the restriction(解除限制) on what kinds of applications they can purchase, those who jailbreak often do so as a reaction against what they consider as a form of censorship(監(jiān)控) imposed by Apple Inc in only allowing the use of their 'approved' apps.
The concept of jailbreaking dates back to July 2007, when it was applied to the iPhone within a month of the device's first release. This first occurrence related to the adding of custom ringtones(個性鈴音), but the idea quickly developed as a means to lift the restriction and equip the phone with games and other applications not licensed by Apple Inc.
小題1:“jailbreak” means that________________.
A.Criminals escape out of the jail
B.People make a great breakthrough in their life
C.It is a way to lift the restriction specially imposed by the Iphone manufacturer.
D.It’s a breakthrough beyond one’s dream.

A team of British surgeons has carried out Gaza’s(加沙)first organ transplants for a long-term plan to train local medical staff to perform the operations.
Two patients underwent kidney(腎臟)transplants at the Shifa, Gaza’s biggest public hospital. The operations were conducted a fortnight ago by a volunteer medical team from the Royal Liverpool hospital.
Ziad Matouk, 42, was born with one kidney and was diagnosed with renal failure(腎衰竭)several years ago. Matouk, whose wife donated one of her kidneys, hopes to return to his job within six months. The couple had sought a transplant in Cairo, but were rejected as unsuitable at a state hospital and could not afford the fee at a private hospital. “We were desperate,” said Matouk.
The UK-Gaza link-up began about a year ago after Abdelkader Hammad, a doctor at the Royal Liverpool hospital, was contacted by an anaesthetist(麻醉師)at the Shifa, who outlined the difficulties the Gaza hospital was facing with dialysis(透析). The Shifa is forced to rely on generators because of power cuts; spare parts for its ageing dialysis machines have been difficult to import; and supplies of consumables are often scarce. After an exploratory trip last April, Hammad---whose family is Palestinian---and three colleagues from Liverpool arrived in Gaza via Egypt last month, bringing specialist equipment. Two patients were selected for surgery. The first, Mohammed Duhair, 42, received a kidney donated by his younger brother in a six-hour operation. Two days later, Matouk received a transplant after his wife, Nadia, 36, was found to be a good match. The surgeon was carried out by the British team, assisted by doctors and nurses from the Shifa. “We are very satisfied with the results,” said Sobbi Skaik, head of surgery at the Gaza hospital.
Skaik hopes that Gaza medical teams will eventually carry out kidney transplants independently, and that other organ transplants may follow. The Shifa is working with the Gaza ministry of health on a plan to train its doctors, surgeons, nursing staff and laboratory technicians in transplant surgery at the Royal Liverpool. “Funding is a problem,” said Hammad. “In the meantime we’ll go back as volunteers to Gaza for the next couple of years to do more transplants.” The Liverpool team’s next visit is scheduled for May.
小題1:What effect does Gaza’s first organ transplants hopes to get?

C.Assisting the Royal Liverpool hospital in perfecting their operations.
D.Calling for international attention at Gaza’s poor medical service.
小題2:Why did the state hospital refuse to practice surgeon for Ziad Matouk?
A.Because he couldn’t afford the fee at a public hospital.
B.Because the hospital didn’t accept dangerous patients.
C.Because they couldn’t find a matched organ.
D.Because his condition was untreatable.
小題3:What is the beginning of the cooperation between the Royal Liverpool hospital and Gaza?
A.A UK doctor contacted Gaza hospital.
B.The Shifa imported medical machines from UK.
C.Ziad Matouk’s condition seemed to get worse.
D.A Shifa doctor turned to Royal Liverpool hospital for help.
小題4:What did Dr. Hammad and his team do recently?
A.They had an exploratory trip in Egypt last April.

A new plan for getting children to and from school is being started by a local government in Eastern England. This could end the worries of many parents fearful for their children’s safety on the roads.
Until now the local government has only been prepared to provide bus services for children living more than three miles from their school, or sometimes less if special reasons existed. Now it has been decided that if a group of parents ask for help in organizing transport they will be prepared to go ahead, as long as the arrangement will not lose money and children taking part will be attending their nearest school.
The new plan is to be tried out this term for children living at Milton who attend Impington School. The children live just within the three-mile limit and the local government said in the past that they would not undertake (agree) to provide free transport to the school. But now they have agreed to offer a sum of money for a bus service from Milton to Impington and back, a plan which has the support of the school’s headmaster.
Between 50 and 60 parents have said they would like their children to take part. Final calculations have still to be carried out, but a government official has said the cost to parents should be less than £20 a term. They have been able to arrange the service at a low cost because there is already an agreement with the bus company for a bus to take children who live further away to Impington. The same bus would now just make one more journey to pick up the Milton children. The official said they would get in touch with other groups of parents who in the past had asked if transport could be provided for their children, to see if they would like to take part in the new plan.
小題1:What is the aim of the plan?
A.To prevent the students’ road accidents.
B.To relieve the traffic pressure.
C.To save time for the parents and students.
D.To help the parents save money.
小題2:How can the local government arrange the new bus service at a low cost?
A.By letting the bus run in the morning only.
B.By limiting the number of the students.
C.By getting the support from the headmaster.
D.By linking the new bus service with the existing one.
小題3:Which of the following is possible if the plan is carried out?
A.The bus company will make much more money.
B.The children can choose whatever school they like.
C.The parents can get rid of their worries.
D.The students in Impington School can have free bus rides.

SYDNEY 2005-01-01 08:30—Mother of two, Jillian Searle, had to choose between her children when she made a life—or—death decision.
Swept up by mountainous tsunami waves at a Thai resort, she could not hold on to both her young sons and survive. Fighting to stay above the waters, she had to choose which one would have to take his chances in the swirling torrent.
“I knew I had to let go of one of them and I just thought I’d better let go of the one that’s the older,” she told Sky News television in a report broadcast on Thursday. She said she was accompanied by the two, Lachie, 5, and two—year—old Blake, and their father, Brad, who had watched the drama helplessly from their first-floor hotel room, when the waves struck.” And I was screaming, trying to find him, and we thought he was dead.”she told reporters on arrival back in Australia.
Lachie was found alive about 2 hours later clinging to a door and looked uninjured as his mother spoke to reporters.
British surfer Martin Markwell is also a lucky man. He had always dreamed of catching that perfect wave—but when it finally came along, it was a nightmare. He was on his surfboard when he was swept up by a tsunami wave.
“It was really terrible because I was surfing, I was really surfing on a wave I wasn’t supposed to be on,”he said. “As an experienced surfer, when I saw the wave come I realized something was wrong, but I couldn’t escape because my surfboard was tied to my ankle.”
His wife, Vicki and son Jake looked on in horror from a hotel balcony as he crashed towards the shore. Many children would start school hungry without breakfast clubs, teachers have claimed. A new survey suggests these clubs are the only way many students can get a meal before lessons.
About 54% of the 552 school staff questioned by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers(ATL)said their school provides a breakfast club for pupils. The biggest reason for them to attend these clubs is that their parents or carer goes to work early, cited by 76.8% of those questioned.
About 22.6% said children attended due to lack of money at home because parents or carers are unemployed and 15.2% said lack of money at home due to changes or cuts to benefits.
About 17.6% said pupils mainly attend breakfast clubs to socialize.
The survey found that teachers believe that offering breakfast to pupils often helps improve their concentration and ability to learn. One primary school teacher said: “Although there is a charge for our breakfast club, we have accessed funding for those pupils on free school meals and the breakfast club had an effect on their attendance, concentration and being in school for the start of lessons.
ATL general secretary Dr Roper said a nutritious meal at the start of the day has a huge impact on pupils’ ability to learn. “Many schools do everything they can to ensure children eat well during school term-time. But there are many children living in poverty, who we fear won’t be getting a decent meal a day in the holidays and this is something the government needs to address,” she said.
A Department for Education spokesman said: “We know how important it is for children to
have a good breakfast. We want schools and local authorities to use their budgets to best meet the needs of their children. Many provide breakfast clubs which offer a free meal to children from poorer families. The Pupil Premium, which will double to £ 2.5 billion in 2014-2015, targets extra money to help schools to provide support such as this to the most disadvantaged children. IF you lived by the sea, you’d know that typhoons are frequent(頻繁的)visitors during summer .They bring Strong winds, heavy rain and flooding(洪水)But most of the time, when people stay indoors, they’re just all right.
This is what the people in the Philippines used to believe – until they met the “super typhoon”, Haiyan.
The typhoon hit the country on Nov 8, at around 5 am, when most people were still asleep. But being at home didn’t keep them safe, since few buildings remained standing once they were hit by wind as violent as 376 kilometers per hour, according to NBC News.
“This is at the top end of any tropical system that we’ve seen on our planet,” said Bryan Norcross, a weather scientist working for NBC. And so far, Haiyan has caused more than 3,600 deaths and left millions of people homeless.
.But where did Haiyan get its destructive power?
According to Brian McNoldy, a tropical weather expert at the University of Miami, US, Haiyan was so strong because “it had everything working for it”
“All typhoons feed off the warm ocean waters,” Colin Price, a weather researcher at Tel Aviv University in Israel, told National Geographic. Tropical storms are like giant engines(發(fā)動機),powered by the heat transferred(傳導(dǎo))from the ocean waters to the air above. However, because of climate change, the oceans have been warming up in recent decades. “Warmer oceans will result in more intense(強烈的)storms,” Price said.
Also, Haiyan started near the equator(赤道),where it was able to pick up more heat before heading to the Philippines. Moreover, the route(路線)it traveled was mostly along open ocean, which means no land prevented it from gathering steam(水蒸氣).
In addition, there happened to be very little “wind shear(風切變)in the area this time. Wind shear is a sudden change in wind speed or direction, which can tear apart developing storms. This is like when you stir(攪動) a glass of water with a chopstick: a swirl(漩渦)will form, ‘but if you move the chopstick in the opposite direction, the swirl will quickly disappear.”
“When all those things align in a certain way, you’re going to get something like‘Haiyan’.”Jim Kossin, a scientist with the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told National Geographic.
小題1:Which of the following is TRUE about typhoons according to the article?

D.This year, more intense storms have happened in the world,
小題2:Which of the following made Haiyan so powerful?
a, lts starting point was the equator
b, The frequency of other intense storms
c. More heat was transferred from the ocean waters to the air above,
d. There was a strong wind shear in the area
e. There was no land in its way
A.a(chǎn)bcB.a(chǎn)cdC.a(chǎn)ceD. ade
小題3:The underlined word “alignin” the last paragraph is closest in meaning to_____
A.disappearB.a(chǎn)ffect each other
C.Arrive at the topD.Happen at the same time
小題4:The article mainly talks about
A.how destructive Haiyan was
B.Why Haiyan was so destructive
C.how typhoons like Haiyan form(形成)
D.ways to protect yourself when typhoons hit
