【6】am listening
if引導(dǎo)的條件狀語(yǔ)從句用一般現(xiàn)在時(shí),主句用一般將來(lái)時(shí),故此處為will reduce。
英語(yǔ)習(xí)慣說(shuō)法 to do ... 要配合 to cut ... ,to cut the foot to fit the shoe 故為to cut。
hang up his boots退休,退役。根據(jù)時(shí)間狀語(yǔ)from then on表示從那時(shí)起,故用過(guò)去將來(lái)時(shí),故為would hang。
根據(jù)時(shí)間狀語(yǔ)since last year可知此處用現(xiàn)在完成時(shí),主語(yǔ)many books是復(fù)數(shù)形式,故謂語(yǔ)用復(fù)數(shù)形式,故為have come。
Can you just slow down 可知我在聽(tīng),所以應(yīng)該用現(xiàn)在進(jìn)行時(shí),主語(yǔ)是I,故用am listening。

(A) No one knows why we sleep, but it’s certain that we need to. People who are prevented from sleeping begin to suffer obvious effects (產(chǎn)生明顯的反應(yīng)) after a few days—they think less clearly, and they fall asleep during the working hours; some may have hallucinations (幻覺(jué)).
There are no rules about sleep. Generally speaking, grown-ups sleep about 7 and a half hours each night and probably more than 60 per cent get between seven and eight hours. But perhaps eight per cent are quite happy with 5 hours or less, and four per cent or so find that they want ten hours or more. (B)如果你感覺(jué)好的話, you’re probably getting enough sleep. The important thing is not to worry how much other people get—their needs may be different. Exercise doesn’t seem to increase the need for sleep—office workers, for example, sleep for about as long as people doing physically active work.
Children sleep more than grown-ups—perhaps 14 to 18 hours soon after birth, going down to grown-up levels by early teenage. Sleep patterns (睡眠模式) also tend (傾向) to be different in the elderly, who may sleep less at night than they did when younger, find sleep getting worse, and often make it a rule to sleep during the daytime.

When Dr, Karen McComb came to Amboseli Park her first task was to learn the names of the one hundred or so elephants most often seen.
Scientists working in the park have learned to study elephants by watching them up close. They have a list of almost one thousand elephants. There are records for all of the elephants born since 1972. Amboseli was a good place for Dr. McComb to study animal communications. Elephants were a great subject because their lifestyle depends on communication.
Dr. McComb and her team had learned a lot about elephant communication, but they kept on thinking about one puzzling (困惑的) watch. Some families were better at distinguishing (區(qū)別) calls of friends from those of strangers.
What made some families smarter than others? The scientists searched their records for an explanation. To their surprise, there was only one factor (因素) of importance: The "smartest" families always had the oldest grandmothers. A family, as it did in all other activities, waited for some signal (信號(hào)) from the grandmother when they heard a strange contact call. And older, more experienced grandmothers were better at telling whether other elephants were strangers or friends just by their calls.
That was an important discovery. It showed how an elephant family depends on the experience of the grandmother.
【1】How do scientists working in the park study elephants?
【2】What did Dr. McComb study?
【3】What did Dr. McComb and her team do for an explanation?
【4】Who does everyone in elephant families listen to?
【5】What does an elephant family depend on in all the activities?

Many people like to keep dogs as their pets. But one dog named Piper is more than a pet. It works four days a week at an airport in Michigan, the US. Its job is to keep birds away from runways(飛機(jī)跑道). Even little birds can cause great danger to the pilots and flights. Last year, Piper drove away more than 2,400 birds. It is a star on the runways and online.
Piper catches people’s eye not only for its job, but also for its look at work. With a pair of ski glasses, ear muffs(耳罩) and boots(靴), the hard-working dog looks very cool. But Piper wears them not for fun. The glasses can protect its eyes, the ear muffs can protect its hearing and the boots can help protect its paws(爪).
Anyone who works hard is cool, so is the hard-working dog.
Judge the following sentences true(T) or false(F) according to the passage.
【1】Piper works five days a week.
【2】Piper’s job is to catch birds.
【3】Piper’s job and its look at work catch people’s eye.
【4】Piper wears a pair of ski glasses, ear muffs and boots for fun.
