The Internet is full of false information. It is important for us all to avoid being fooled by such information. Here are three examples of Internet hoaxes.

On his website, a man by the name of Tony has asked for money to save the life of a pretty little rabbit named Toby that he saved from under his house. A cat must have attacked the rabbit, the man said, so he took it in. he gave Toby loving care and nursed him back to health. There is a very cruel point, however. If the man doesn’t receive enough money, he will eat poor little Toby. (Don’t worry, though. Remember, it’s just a hoax!)

While the streets of New Orleans, the USA, were still flooded after a terrible hurricane (颶風), a frightening e-mail was sent around the Internet. It included a photograph of a large crocodile(鱷魚) over five meters long. According to the message, it had been swimming around the flooded city eating people. It was later discovered that the photographs of the crocodile were of one that was caught in the Congo (剛果) years before.

The following e-mail hoax takes in many people. It says that a large British company will pay you to send their e-mail to as many people as possible. For every person that you send the e-mail to, it promises you will receive $5.00; for every person that you send it to that sends it to someone else, you’ll get $3.00; and for every third person that receives it, you will be paid $1.00. To make it even more believable, the sender says that at first he thought it was a hoax, but the company soon sent him $800.00.

1.The underlined word “hoaxes” means .

A. games B. websites C. lies D. stories

2.The crocodile in the photograph actually lived in________ .

3.Some people believe that they can_________ if they send e-mail.

A. become famous B. find friends

4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

B. If the man doesn’t receive enough money, he will eat poor little Toby.

C. The crocodile swam around the flooded city and ate several people.

D. Someone received $800.00 from the company because of the e-mail.

5.The main idea of the passage is to _________.

A. teach how to create a professional website with attractive stories

You’ve got plenty of emails from your mom, and maybe even a few from dear old grandma. But have you ever received a message from a river?

Now, Ireland’s River Lee is sending out much information, thanks to wireless(無線的) technology. In a program called the DEPLOY project, scientists have put some sensors(傳感器) in rivers that can find pollution levels.

Instead of asking scientists to collect water samples several times a day, the government can now examine pollution levels in the water, and find out if there is anything polluted entering the river. This makes it much easier for scientists to protect the environment, since problems can be discovered before a serious pollution accident really happens.

People in the area can also receive free reports from the river, so that they can find out whether the water is safe for swimming or boating on a certain day. And people can also know if the water is clear enough for them to drink and use.

The DEPLOY project has not only started in Ireland, also the same programs have started in thousands of places around the U.S. Now you live in a world in which you could receive information with your mobile phone about environment. The technology should help to make us know more about the pollution that surrounds us—which just might get us all a little more involved with trying to clean up our world.

1. How do scientists find pollution levels in rivers?

A. By putting sensors in rivers.

4.What can we mainly learn from the fourth paragraph?

A. People can receive reports from the river

B. People can find if they can swim in the water.

C. The project is good for people’s daily life

D. People can know if the water is clear enough

5.Which of the following is TRUE?

A. The DEPLOY project has only started in the United States.

I grew up in New Hampshire, a small town in South Canada, where in my father’s words for the seasons were “Spring, Summer, Fairtime and Winter!” At that time, a week-long fair was held in the town every autumn. Thousands of people from other towns came to sell and buy things. It was the busiest time of the year.

When “Fairtime” came, my grandma became the most “useful” and busiest person of the family. Grandma was a kind, well-educated old lady. She was good at cooking. All her relatives liked the food she cooked. During “Fairtime”, they would come to live in her house and have meals there. Grandma was always happy to look after them.

Year after year, many people moved to big cities. There was no longer “Fairtime”. Grandma became very old and was gradually(逐漸地) going blind. My parents and I moved to live with Grandma in her house. We did our best to make her day-to-day life as comfortable as possible. I was at high school then.

What I often did at home was to help Grandma with the daily newspaper’s crossword puzzle.(填字游戲) However, she didn’t look happy. She often sat in her room for hours, without saying a word.

To attract people to move back, the Town Hall decided to reopen the fair. One day, when I came back from school, I saw Grandma wearing her glasses, washing the dishes in the kitchen. With a big smile on her face, she looked a lot much younger. She told me that her two nieces(侄女)would come. “They said the food I cooked was very delicious and they want to stay in my house again,” Grandma said happily. “They will stay here for one week and we can have a big party. That must be the busiest week I’ve had in years!”

I suddenly realized that Grandma didn’t want to be looked after. She wanted to be “useful”, appreciated and helpful.

1.What was mentioned to make Grandma happy in the passage?

A. My parents moved to live with her.

B. The writer did the crossword puzzle with her.

C. Her two nieces would come.

D. We tried to make her live comfortably.

2.Which is NOT true according to the passage?

A. Grandma preferred looking after others to being looked after.

B. The fair usually lasts for about a week.

C. Grandma was kind and educated very well.

D. Grandma liked to stay in the room for hours without saying a word.

3.What does the underlined word“appreciated” mean?

A. 激動的B. 感激的 C.輕松的 D.迷惑的

4.What’s the best title for the passage?

A. Fairtime B. My “Old” Grandma

C. A Small Town D. Grandma’s Family
